Join fellow members of the Florida Lighthouse Association (FLA) for an unforgettable Winter Membership Meeting and Social on February 27–28, 2026, at the historic St. Marks Lighthouse in Crawfordville, Florida.  Set within the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, this iconic 19th-century beacon—still an active aid to navigation—offers sweeping views of Apalachee Bay and a setting rich in maritime history.  The refuge itself is a paradise for nature lovers, with miles of scenic trails, exceptional bird-watching, coastal vistas, and abundant wildlife at every turn.  Members can explore the Lighthouse grounds, stroll the shoreline, and enjoy the peaceful beauty of Florida’s Forgotten Coast.  Beyond the refuge, the Crawfordville area invites you to savor fresh Gulf seafood, discover small-town charm, and venture to nearby natural treasures such as Wakulla Springs. This gathering blends fellowship, history, and outdoor adventure in a place where Florida’s lighthouse legacy truly shines.

Meet and interact with lighthouse enthusiasts, museum professionals, historians, and historic preservationists during this fun-filled weekend event.  Our host will be the Friends of St. Marks Wildlife Refuge, a non-profit organization devoted to supporting St. Marks Wildlife Refuge in the Florida Panhandle.  You'll have the opportunity to discover the fascinating history of the St. Marks Lighthouse, which is the second oldest lighthouse in Florida.

On Friday evening, participants will enjoy a social at the Best Western Wakulla Inn & Suites in Crawfordville.  The membership meeting will be held on Saturday at the Panacea Community Center, Panacea, Florida, and then participants can drive to and climb the St. Marks Lighthouse, an opportunity that is not offered to the general public.

FUN AND INTERESTING HISTORICAL FACTS ABOUT THE ST. MARKS LIGHTHOUSE

  1. The original Lighthouse was built in 1830. The current Lighthouse was built in 1842, making it the second-oldest surviving lighthouse tower in Florida (after the 1838 Amelia Island Lighthouse).
  2. The Lighthouse marks the entrance to the St. Marks River, which had ports serving the Tallahassee area. The Tallahassee Railroad to the port city of St. Marks operated from 1837 until 1983. The route became Florida's first rail trail.
  3. The Lighthouse has survived numerous major hurricanes and damage from the Civil War.
  4. St. Marks is the only masonry lighthouse in Florida with a full keeper dwelling attached directly to the base of the tower.
(The dwelling at Pensacola was originally built as a completely separate structure, but later connected to the tower.)
  5. In 1892, keeper Charles Fine planted the large oak tree located on the west side of lighthouse.
  6. The longest serving keeper was John Young Gresham, from 1918 to 1949. His in-laws were the previous keepers, Charles and Sarah Fine. His son, Alton, later served as one of the last Coast Guard keepers at St. Marks, which was automated in 1960.
  7. St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1931. St. Marks is the only Florida lighthouse located in a NWR.
  8. In the 1930s, as part of the NWR, the Civilian Conservation Corps constructed the first road and power line to the Lighthouse. Until that time, the keepers had to travel six miles by boat to the city of St. Marks.
  9. Despite the small gallery deck, eight Coast Guard lookouts were stationed at the Lighthouse during World War II to keep a 24/7 lookout over Apalachee Bay. They lived in a small wooden barracks, located at what is now the south end of the lighthouse parking lot.
  10. The Lighthouse's historic fourth-order Fresnel lens is on exhibit in the Refuge's visitor center, and a functional replica lens is in the lantern.
