I’ve always been a bit of a history nut, especially Florida history. I got interested in the preservation of lighthouses when I met a girl and she took me to a Florida Lighthouse Association meeting. I was hooked. And, oh yeah, I married the girl!
The Florida Lighthouse Association is dedicated to the preservation and protection of the 30 remaining lighthouses that dot the 1300 mile coastline of Florida. Through our “Visit Our Lights” specialty license plate program and other fundraising efforts, we have been able to provide over $2.3 million in grants to local preservation and museum groups dedicated to the work. Most Florida lighthouses are the earliest buildings built in the state. The lighthouses allowed shipping to grow and prosper, and the state grew and prospered as a result. We are proud of the more than 20 local organizations dedicated to preservation efforts to one or more lighthouses. We are also proud that we all work together, share expertise and resources in our preservation efforts.
Our Association is made up of museum and preservation professionals, serious volunteers, and people who just love lighthouses. I am inviting you to look into this organization and join us as we work to help keep the lights shining in Florida.
Respectfully,
Ken Smith
President
