NICE TO KNOW meeting INFORMATION

SILENT AUCTION: The Anclote Key Lighthouse will offer a unique silent auction for a seaplane ride over the Lighthouse on November 8. There will be only one lucky winner. The winning auction participant will be announced on Friday night at the Social.

RAFFLE TICKETS AND SOUVENIRS: The Anclote Key Lighthouse will sell raffle tickets for gift baskets with FREE day passes from nearby Honeymoon Island State Park and Weeki Wachee Springs State Park (total donations valued at over $150), a Christopher Still piece of lighthouse art, and a handmade stained glass lighthouse piece.

Anclote Key Lighthouse souvenirs, such as T-shirts, ornaments, coasters, cards, and leatherworks will be available for purchase.

ATTENDEE GIFT BAGS:  Anclote Key Lighthouse will provide each attendee with a gift bag, including a Tarpon Springs map with directions to event locations, such as Howard Park Beach, Anclote River County Park boat ramp (shuttle boats departure point), restaurants, and painted murals on Tarpon Springs buildings.

ANCLOTE KEY LIGHTHOUSE CLIMBING PROCEDURES AND SUGGESTIONS

Attendees will have the opportunity to view and climb the Lighthouse and explore the Anclote Key Preserve. These are the required and suggested climbing procedures:

  • At the dock, attendees must climb up or down a five-step ladder depending on whether they are disembarking or embarking the boat.
  • Groups of up to eight attendees can climb the Lighthouse at the same time.
  • Your group will have a 30-minute climbing experience before the next group can climb.
  • There are a total of 130 steps, including 3 steps leading up to the Lighthouse. The top steps are very narrow, so turning your feet sideways helps. Going down, some climbers prefer to start backwards on the balls of their feet until the steps widen.
  • There will be docents at the top and bottom of the Lighthouse to answer questions.
  • After climbing the Lighthouse, you will be treated to “Island water.”

CUTSURIES & ANCLOTE KEY LIGHTHOUSE RESTROOMS

  • Cutsuries has two bathrooms and both are handicap-accessible.
  • There are no restrooms at the state park (the hurricane took out the potties on Anclote Key).
  • We recommend that attendees plan ahead for restroom needs and consider using the Anclote River County Park restroom before and/or after the trip.

INSECT REPELLANT: This is a must! Mosquitoes, horseflies, and no-see-ums (tiny biting flies) love Anclote Key as much as we do. Bring the insect repellent of your choice and apply liberally! Some options include: Deep Woods Off!, AVON Skin So Soft, and Bounce dryer sheets.

Therefore, when completing your sign-up sheet, please include your phone number and e-mail address so that you can be contacted.
  2. If the meeting/boating days must be reversed, all Saturday meeting activities will be held at Cutsuries on Sunday.

ANCLOTE KEY LIGHTHOUSE INTERESTING FACTS

Did You Know?

  • The islands on which Anclote Key Lighthouse (AKL) was built were named “Anclote,” Spanish for anchor, due to the method Spanish sailing vessels would use to navigate the shallow channels in the area.  Navigation was accomplished by attaching a line to a kedge anchor, dropping the anchor at a distance in the desired direction of travel, and then using the line to pull the boat to the anchor.
  • AKL was built in 1887 as an aid to navigation. It was a big year because it was also the year in which the City of Tarpon Springs was incorporated and the railroad arrived.
  • AKL is 110’ tall; made of cast iron to withstand the salty air; designed with a skeletal architecture to allow the storm winds and tides to pass through; contains a Fourth Order Fresnel lens (original was a Third Order) with a range of 12 miles and a focal plane of 110’; and includes 127 steps to the gallery deck with the light and light deck above that.
  • Around the beginning of the 20th century, John K. Cheyney started a commercial sponge venture in Tarpon Springs. Cheyney hired John M. Cocoris, a native of Greece, for his skill at harvesting and processing sponges. Cocoris sent for his brothers and an experienced diving crew from his homeland, and it wasn’t long before Tarpon Springs was known as the sponge capital of the world. The Greek influence in Tarpon Springs is still clearly visible today.
  • AKL was vital in navigating the sponge boats, among others, back towards the Anclote River, whose mouth was adjacent to Tarpon Springs.
  • AKL was automated in 1952 and discontinued in 1984.  An extensive restoration in 2003 returned the Lighthouse to its former glory, including re-lighting.
  • After AKL was automated, Anclote Key became a national wildlife refuge. The Florida Park Service began leasing 102 acres for recreation in 1960, and acquired the rest of the refuge through a land swap in 1971. The Lighthouse was the last part of the island.
  • An Anclote Key Preserve State Park ranger lives on the island near the Lighthouse. AKL and ranger’s quarters are fully “off the grid,” relying on solar power for electricity, and rain collection and reverse osmosis for water. Friends of Anclote Key State Park & Lighthouse, a citizen-support organization helps preserve the island and Lighthouse.
  • Soil around the Lighthouse is contaminated by lead from paint and batteries. A FLA grant funded construction of a fence to keep visitors off the contaminated soil and restore.
  • Please take a virtual tour of AKL:  https://youtu.be/dPMwxJOxrLU
Anclote Key Lighthouse Keepers were dedicated and accomplished, multi-talented, and independent:
  • Robert S. Myers spent 44 years of service on the island, three years as an Assistant Keeper and 41 years as Head Lighthouse Keeper.
  • Thomas A. Moody served as Head Keeper from 1914 to 1923. In 1919 the Lighthouse Service recognized him for rescuing two men from a capsized sloop, towing a disabled sponge-divers’ boat to safety with two men aboard who were without food and water, and towing to safe anchorage a schooner that was lying six miles offshore in a disabled condition.
  • Keeper Samuel Hope Jr was also a dentist. He made a wedding ring for his wife from the gold fillings he had pulled.
  • Other keepers had pigs and chickens on the island.
