  1. Your Florida Lighthouse Association (FLA) membership must be paid in full and cannot expire prior to May 17, 2026;
  2. You MUST be registered for the event under either the Full-Weekend or Saturday-Only options. Friday-Only registrants will NOT be allowed to climb or visit the Lighthouse.
  3. You MUST take our shuttle to and from the Lighthouse and display your badge when boarding the shuttle and entering the Lighthouse. FLA meeting staff will ask to see your badge at these locations. The City of Fernandina Beach does not allow public parking at the Lighthouse itself because it sits inside a residential neighborhood.

How To Register Online

Note:  Your registration will not be processed and finalized unless your Florida Lighthouse Association membership dues are current, paid in full, and do not expire before May 17, 2026. This is an FLA insurance requirement.

Note to Non-Members: Non-members wishing to become a new member of FLA and register for the meeting at the same time may do so by selecting the desired registration option of your choice:  New Member (Individual or Family) and which days (Full-Weekend, Saturday-Only, or Friday-Only) and pay for both your annual FLA membership and event registration with one simple transaction.

CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY

To cancel your meeting registration and receive a full refund, you must e-mail the FLA  Administrative Assistant at admin@floridalighthouses.org before midnight (EDT) on May 8. Written requests for registration refunds may also be submitted by mail to FLA's official mailing address:

FLA’s policy is that after the registration cutoff date, it will make no refunds for registration fees regardless of the reason. There will be no exceptions.

FLA is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization and must generate sufficient funds to cover the costs that it must pay product and service providers after the cutoff date.

TIPS FOR TOURING THE AMELIA ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring sun protection, and use insect repellent.
  • Bring binoculars and a camera. The Lighthouse is framed by trees and sky, with views of the river and marshland below. The natural lighting is especially nice in late afternoon.
  • Restrooms are not available at the Lighthouse. Allow sufficient time to use the restrooms at the Atlantic Recreation Center before you board the shuttle.
  • While there is no giftshop at the Lighthouse itself, there are plenty of nearby shops that carry light-house themed merchandise, especially along Centre Street, which is the main historic street in downtown Fernandina Beach, only 5 – 10 minutes away by car from the Atlantic Recreation Center.
  • The City of Fernandina Beach does not allow Lighthouse visitors to drive to or park at the Lighthouse. FLA will provide a shuttle to transport registrants to the Lighthouse from the Atlantic Recreation Center Auditorium. With the shuttle, it’s a 1.5 – 2 mile drive to the Lighthouse (4-6 minutes).

THEIR SACRIFICE, OUR GUIDING LIGHT - MEETING BLING

A Beacon of Remembrance - Honoring our fallen heroes with pride and gratitude

Just as the lighthouse stands as a guiding light along the coast, we pause during our Spring Meeting to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of the men and women of our armed forces who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their legacy continues to guide and inspire us, and the freedoms we enjoy are a lasting testament to their devotion.

In their honor, we invite all members to show their patriotic spirit by wearing red, white, and blue throughout the meeting. Whether it’s a favorite shirt, hat, beads, or festive flair, your participation will help create a meaningful and visible expression of unity, remembrance, and appreciation.

Rising proudly above the breezy marshes of beautiful Amelia Island, the legendary Amelia Island Lighthouse has been guiding ships — and charming lighthouse lovers — since 1839. As Florida’s oldest lighthouse, this historic beacon offers a rare chance to climb its 60+ winding steps (don’t worry… there are bragging rights at the top). The Florida Lighthouse Association’s (FLA) recent grant funding has helped to repair and protect the Lighthouse so future generations — including slightly out-of-breath lighthouse enthusiasts — can continue to enjoy this coastal icon and its spectacular Atlantic views.

The Florida Lighthouse Association’s Spring Membership Meeting kicks off Friday evening, May 15, with a lively buffet social at the comfortable Residence Inn Amelia Island — the perfect place to reconnect with old friends, meet new ones, and begin debating who will reach the Lighthouse’s lantern room first. Saturday brings the business meeting, engaging speakers, a catered lunch buffet, auctions, lighthouse merchandise, and a scenic bus ride to the highlight of the weekend — an exclusive climb not offered to the general public. Attendance is limited to the first 100 members, and their guests so register quickly — especially to capture the $20 early-bird discount before it disappears faster than sunscreen at low tide.

When you’re not climbing, bidding, or socializing, you’ll find plenty to explore nearby. Wander the charming streets and waterfront of Fernandina Beach, sample fresh coastal flavors at favorites like Timoti’s Seafood Shak or Salt Life Food Shack, relax on wide sandy beaches, or venture to lively Jacksonville for museums, riverfront sights, and shopping. Whether you come for lighthouse lore, seaside scenery, or simply good company, this unforgettable weekend promises history, humor, and just enough stair-climbing adventure to earn your dessert.

Now is the time to secure your place at one of FLA’s most memorable spring gatherings — where rare lighthouse access, coastal charm, and warm fellowship come together for a truly special experience. With attendance limited and the $20 early-bird savings available for a short time, early registration ensures you won’t miss the climb, the camaraderie, or the unforgettable moments awaiting you on beautiful Amelia Island. Read on for complete details and make your plans today to be part of a weekend that promises to rise above the rest. ✨

You will have a great opportunity to meet and interact with lighthouse enthusiasts, museum professionals, historians, and historic preservationists during this fun-filled weekend event. Our host will be the City of Fernandina Beach, which is responsible for maintaining the Lighthouse structure, grounds, and preserving it as an historic site. The City took ownership from the United States Coast Guard in 2001, but the Coast Guard still operates and maintains the actual navigation light, often with help from Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteers.

Come meet and chat with FLA’s own Tom Sintes, a U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary member, who volunteers to watch over the tower, and provides tours and stories to visitors. Tom’s grandfather, Thomas John O’Hagan, was keeper at Amelia from 1925 – 1954. His great-grandfather, Thomas Patrick O’Hagan, was principal keeper there from 1905 to 1925. Tom has been instrumental in securing a $125,000 Gene Oakes Grant from FLA to partially underwrite major restoration work there. Come with us to the Lighthouse and get an up close and personal look at the results.

On Friday evening, participants will enjoy a catered buffet social at the Residence Inn by Marriott Amelia Island.  The membership meeting will be held on Saturday at the Atlantic Recreation Center, Fernandina Beach, Florida, and then participants will enjoy a short, but scenic shuttle bus ride to the Amelia Island Lighthouse where they will have a rare opportunity to climb. Climbing this lighthouse is generally not offered to the public. Participants can also just enjoy the beautiful view from the bluff overlooking the Amelia River, the informational signs explaining the Lighthouse’s role in navigation and local history, and the photo opportunities of the Lighthouse--framed by trees and sky--and the river and marshland below.

FUN AND INTERESTING HISTORICAL FACTS ABOUT THE AMELIA ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE

  1. Amelia Island Lighthouse is the oldest surviving lighthouse tower in Florida, dating to 1839.
  2. Despite the age of the rest of the lighthouse, the lantern and Fresnel lens are among the newest in Florida. The lighthouse underwent renovations in 1903, during which the present lantern and lens were installed.
  3. Amelia Island Lighthouse is one of only three in Florida with granite stairs in the tower. The others are Old St. Johns River and Loggerhead Key.
  4. The lighthouse began its existence in 1820 across the St. Mary's River on Cumberland Island. The original tower was torn down and rebuilt on Amelia Island in 1838-1839.
  5. Fernandina Beach was the eastern terminus of the first cross-Florida railroad (to Cedar Key) and one of the five largest cities in Florida at the start of the Civil War.
  6. Amos Latham, the first lighthouse keeper, was a Revolutionary War veteran.
  7. The lighthouse is closely tied to the O'Hagan family. The longest-serving keepers were Thomas Patrick O'Hagan (1905-1925) and his son, Thomas John O'Hagan (1912-1954). David Cowie O'Hagan (1925-1934) also started a keeper career here as his brother's assistant. Descendants have been long been active with the local Coast Guard Auxiliary.
  8. For several decades, the lighthouse formed a range with a movable beacon light.
  9. A separate Amelia Island North Range also served the difficult channel leading into Fernandina. The remains of the brick oil house from these range lights can be seen at the Willow Pond Trailhead in Fort Clinch State Park.
  10. John Miles, longtime keeper of the North Range Lights, was one of the African-Americans to have ever served as a civilian lightkeeper in Florida. Midway through his 22 year career, he lost part of his leg in an off-duty accident, but continued to serve thanks to an artificial limb.
