FLA invites you to join its members for a weekend of fun, friendship, and adventure at Naval Station Mayport (NSM) in Jacksonville, Florida, during its 2024 spring meeting on June 21 and 22.  The Station is adjacent to the St. Johns River, Florida’s longest river, and one of the few rivers in the U. S. that flows north.

Meet and interact with lighthouse enthusiasts, museum professionals, historians, and historic preservationists during this fun-filled weekend event. Discover fascinating facts about Florida's 30 surviving historic lighthouses from experts across the State and enjoy an afternoon bus trip to two of these lighthouses on NSM, a military base established prior to World War II.

NSM is one of the largest and most sophisticated military bases in the world.  It is home to twenty-one Naval ships, several helicopter squadrons, and two lighthouses--the St. Johns River Lighthouse and the St. Johns Lighthouse.  You will have the unique opportunity to visit both of these sentinels and learn about them from a Naval historian.  This is because the base restricts access to them by the general public. In addition, Mayport officials will provide attendees with a tour of either a U. S. Navy ship or a helicopter squadron.

Come along with us to see and learn, firsthand, how lighthouses still play an important role in guiding today’s mightiest ships and other vessels safely to their destinations!

Members have the options of attending this event in person or virtually via ZOOM.

    2024 FLA Spring Meeting Information

    Meeting Location

All attendees must first enter NSM’s main gate, located at 3000 Mayport Road, Jacksonville, FL, NSM, and inform the guard that they are attending the FLA event. The guard will then direct the attendees to the nearby Ocean Breeze Catering & Conference Center (OBC&CC) representative. All attendees will present their ID cards (legal forms, such as driver’s license or passport) to the representative.

The representative will verify that the attendee and all other passengers are on FLA’s authorized registration list.  Attendees will then proceed to the OBC&CC, located at 243 Baltimore Street, OBC&CC.

    2024 FLA Spring Meeting Agenda

    Friday, June 21, Agenda

Chartered Bus Trip to St. Johns River and St. Johns Lighthouses and a U. S. Navy Ship or a Helicopter Squadron* 11:45 AM - 4:15 PM (EDT)

FLA Social Event**: 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM (EDT)

*Please arrive at the Naval Station Mayport main gate between 11:00 AM and 11:30 AM (EDT).  FLA members will board a chartered bus at 11:45 AM (EDT) at the OBC&CC for the trip to the two lighthouses and a U. S. Navy ship or a helicopter squadron. If you arrive early, please congregate in the Seaglass Wine Bar, as another function will be occurring in the OBC&CC.

Unfortunately, you cannot drive to these locations in your own personal vehicle because they are on a U. S. military installation.  Only U. S. citizens are allowed to view the Lighthouses and tour the ship or helicopter squadron at this time due to Department of Defense public-access restrictions on U.S. military installations world-wide.

**After the chartered bus trip on Friday, FLA’s social will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the OBC&CC. A self-serve buffet dinner catered by the Conference Center will be provided.  Menu items include tossed green salad, roast beef au jus with carver, mahi-mahi with lemon-butter and white wine sauce, herb-roasted potatoes, wild rice, sauteed garden vegetables, seasoned green beans, dinner rolls, and beverages (coffee, iced tea, and water).  There will also be a station with assorted desserts and a cash bar.

The cash bar will offer bottled water, soda, beer, wine and spirits. Prices exclude gratuity and tax (tax is not charged on the base). The bartender will accept cash and credit cards.

If an attendee elects to use a credit card to pay for his or her bar tab, the bartender will start a bar tab showing the attendee’s credit card number when the attendee orders the first drink.  The bartender will request for all subsequent drinks that the attendee initial the bar tab. At the end of the social, the bartender will process the total amount of the bar tab to the attendee’s credit card.

An ATM machine is not available in the Conference Center. The closest ATM machine is at the Navy Federal Credit Union, 460 Massey Avenue, Building 460, NSM, which is a short walk from the Conference Center.  The credit union’s telephone number is 888-842-6328, and the ATM’s hours of operation are 7/24.

Naval Station Mayport ADA Site Access and
    Onsite Rules/Restrictions

    • ADA Accessibility and Restrooms: None of the tour sites are ADA accessible.  OBC&CC is ADA-accessible and has restrooms.  There are no restrooms at St. Johns Lighthouse, but there are restrooms aboard the U. S. Navy ship. Please be aware that the U. S. Navy ship is an industrial environment with lots of tripping hazards and physical requirements to go up and down multiple steep sets of metal stairs.  If an attendee has limited physical mobility, FLA recommends that he or she not tour the ship.
    • Photography: Photos are allowed while traveling on the bus and at all locations, except for entry points like the main gate or pier entry points.  Our guide will point these out during the narrated tour. Depending on the tour route aboard the ship or helicopter squadron, there are some photo restrictions, but the tour guide will notify you.
    • Tour Groups: All FLA attendees must remain together with their tour guide for the entire duration of the tour.

      IMPORTANT NOTE

      • Last Name, First Name and Middle Initial

St. Johns River and St. Johns Lighthouse Facts

      Did You Know

      • Four different lighthouses and one lightship have marked the entrance to the St. Johns River since 1830? The first was constructed in 1830 St. Johns River. The first two towers were lost to erosion; the third was completed in 1859.
      • The first St. Johns River Lighthouse was completed in 1830 and lasted a mere three years.
      • Construction of NSM resulted in the demolition of all St. Johns River light station structures, except the tower which was partially buried to level the area for the nearby airfield.
      • From 1929-1954, a lightship (LV-84/WAL-509) marked the river rather than an active lighthouse. The vessel had previously been used offshore at Brunswick, GA.
      •  St. Johns River Lightship had one of the first three Lighthouse Service radio beacons in Florida – the others being Jupiter Inlet and the Dry Tortugas Lighthouses.
      • The fourth lighthouse, St. Johns Lighthouse (AKA Mayport Lighthouse), active since 1954, has a unique art deco concrete design. It was one of the last on-land lighthouses built by the Coast Guard.
      • While other lighthouses have had their lanterns removed, the 1954 lighthouse is perhaps the only American lighthouse deliberately built without a lantern. The Lighthouse’s original optic was an aerobeacon covered by a small plexiglass dome.
      • St. Johns is one of only two Florida light stations that had fog signals – the other being Egmont Key.
      • The tragic events of September 11, 2001, are one of the few instances where America has been attacked on her home soil. Another such attack, also planned by foreign infiltrators, was attempted during World War II.  Nazi spies in 1942 landed via German submarine and rubber boat not far from where the St. Johns Lighthouse now stands.  They did not do any damage and they soon were rounded up by the FBI.  In time, all were tried for espionage and either sentenced to prison or executed.
      • The original Mayport Lighthouse Association (MLA) formed in 1997 with the goal of preserving and interpreting the two surviving lighthouses, but their efforts were ruined because of post-9/11 security changes. Recently, a group of FLA members reformed the MLA to resume efforts to save and restore public access to the 1859 lighthouse.
      • Besides the lighthouses and lightship at the mouth of the River, the screw-pile cottage Dames Point Lighthouse marked a large bend in the St. Johns River from 1872 to 1893. It was rendered obsolete by the dredging of a new river channel.  The lighthouse structure was destroyed by fire on December 25, 1913.
