Two dozen Oakes family members and FLA officers gathered at St. Augustine Lighthouse grounds January 26, 2007 at 2 pm to plant a memorial oak tree in honor of Gene Oakes, past president, who died a year previously. Gene's brothers Bowden and Avery and widow Beverly spoke briefly in a poignant and moving ceremony.
Following the tree planting Beverly and her family joined with the other FLA members at their quarterly meeting. Beverly Oakes introduced the Oakes family members, including Gene’s brothers Bowden and Avery and daughter in-law, Michelle. The brothers told stories of growing up with Gene and what he meant to them and their family. Michelle read a touching letter on behalf of her husband, Robert. The Oakes family thanked everyone involved in the tree planting ceremony at the St. Augustine Lighthouse.
